Shading guide! by OreoCat

Before I start please take everything I say with a grain of salt, it's just advice from a vid and your style is unique, and may not fully apply here!

Let's start with the first one, it uses black for shadows and white for highlights. This can be a problem since it desaturates the original color, making it look, well, desaturated. This is great for some things but less for others!

#tutorial (?) #shading #guide #shadingguide (idk i'm making things up lol)

Now for the second one! It uses a darker version of the original color for shadows and lighter versions for highlights! I've been told this isn't how you supposed to do it but I do thing some people (including myself lol) do still like the look it gives, this is also the method I mostly use!

Finally, the third! It uses a darker, cooler (more blue) version of the original color for shadows and a warmer (more red/orange) color for highlights! (cont.)

This brightens things up a lot, and the tint of cooler/warmer colors doesn't have to be much! For example, the highlights in the example are slightly green, while the shadows are dark blue! This is good for brighter scenes and characters, though i'd recommend the second example if this isn't what your going for!

Ok ya'll can comment now! I hope this helps! Feel free to tag people and ask any questions you may have!

Great advice. : ) Different materials reflect light in different ways, with different textures. Cloth, as dmonstrated here, is best kept saturated with color. You don't want to highlight cloth with white, because it doesn't reflect light directly. Sky blue helps make a blue cloth look lighter, while still being saturated with color.
However, you'll get different results if it was made of glass, or metal.

Again, you gave a good examle here. :)
