It's called an optical illusion. This one is of the contrast/comparison variety. You may get a similar effect if you compare lookng at a screen like your phone or Switch in a dark room, compared to outside at high noon. In th dark, your screen looks bright, but outside it looks dark.
Even on a cloudy/ rainy day. The clouds look dark, but they are still brighter than your screen.
@Marlee9910 Thanks. I was a bit surprised with the cloudy one when I first heard of it. Had to see it for myself. Eventually, a rainy day came along, so I held my mobile phone up to the sky to compare its whiteness to the cloud's greyness, and was pleasanly surprised by the results.
