its the year 2015, and half the population has been destroyed by a un-natrual event called 'the second impact' but that happened 15 years ago. theres a group of people called 'NERV' who make large robots/mechas that are dedicated to destroy these large creatures called 'angels' that reek havoc, but the robots (known as evas) need a 14 yr pilot, which is where the protagonist, shinji ikari comes into place, his dad,gendo ikari, is the leader of NERV
