It was the late afternoon. Sonic asked Riku to come over to the park.

Sonic perked up at the sight of Riku "Oh! Riku, y-you're here! I-I-I-I was worried you weren't gonna show up!" Sonic stammered. He sounded nervous.

"Of course I'm here, Sonic. You're my best friend," Riku replied.

Sonic sighed quietly, hearing the word "friend." He wanted something more. He knew now was the perfect time to ask. Now or never.

"R-Riku?"

"Yes, Sonic?"

"Do you know why I asked you to come here?"

"Here... this is close to where we first met, right? The path I walked down where I first saw you is right over there."

"Yes, Riku... I-I was wondering if... if... we're really best friends?"

"Yeah, we're best friends. Since we were seven. What else would we be?"

"Well, Riku, I... I..." -Sonic took a deep breath- "I love you."

"You mean as... friends?"

"N-no."

Riku paused. His face was flushed. "Sonic."

"Yes, Riku?"

"I love you too."

Sonic grinned widely, and Riku quickly did the same. Riku held his hand out and Sonic took it into his. Their fingers interlocked and they looked at each other lovingly. Together, they walked hand-in-hand, into the setting sun.
