As for tips, I'm definitely not an expert, ^ ^' but I do like to incorporate other colors into my base colors, but in a subtle manner so that the base color still reads as the color chosen. An example would be like the grass in this painting, if you look closely towards the bottom, you might be able to see that I've added some hints of dark blue to the grass at the very bottom, but overall the grass still looks green. This helps to make the colors pop.
