Lions are a type of big cat, they all have the same ancestors such as smilodon, Dinofelis,Machairodus, the American lion, the list goes on :P

Well yeah, all big cats: Lions, tigers, medium cats: Jaguars, cheetahs, lynx, bobcat, exd, and small cats: Housecats all evolved from those 'cats' mentioned above :)
