This one ended up using the "back to front" technique quite a bit to get more depth.
General idea is to paint furthest things first and gradually make your way closer. That way things that are in front "overlap" in the right way instead of having conflicting depth information.

Not sure how to do it at the macro level while I'm also still figuring out the general composition.
