I don't know if a rat big enough to crawl in the open would be drinking any milk. As a suggestion, rats have poor eyesight (they travel along walls often because they can keep their whiskers against it and find upcoming turns easily like that.) They do have a good sense of smell, so if you are going to feed it then I guess pick something with a small amount of aroma (not too much or it might be too strong of a smell... and some smells like peppermint drive them away.)
