As far as tips go, I'm still a novice myself, so I dunno if I can help too much, but, I'd say for something of this size, just start with the largest details first, shade/highlight those, then if there's still room, move on to smaller ones. And if you're using a reference, and you're making a smaller pixel image, sometimes it's a good idea to make certain details different, or take them away entirely, sometimes it looks better that way.
