Jewel is not only related to Emerald, but Sonic as well. Emerald, Sonic, and his Dad, Lightspeed are descendants of Jewel's hedgehog side of the family, while the only kid of her Hedgedragon side is her 1st and only son Paradox.
She went full hedgehog after she was imprisoned and had gotten hit hard on her head. So everyone took off her necklace, getting rid of her dragon side, and said she had "died", then she lived the rest of her life as a hedgehog with amnesia.
