To be honest, I just draw what comes to mind, and fine tune it later.

I also find it best to keep in fairly simple at first, because if the character gets TOO complex then people have a harder time relating to them. They also get tiring to draw.

example: chikara is inspired by ganondorf and clark was inspired by dark link and impa

What @AmeNoStudios said is very true. I have several OC like those as well. I also have one that came about because I was inspired to draw an outfit, and the random model I put in it just sort of became an OC.
