Actually those were unrelated-
A Mary Sue is pretty much an overpowered character that nobody likes in roleplay or as a protagonist in a TV show
A Mary Sue would be like a character with a magical gun in a fist fight
Basically you have to put a cap on how much power you can wield otherwise it's not fun
