The origin of the 2012 appocalypse comes from speculation based on the fact that the ancient Mayan civilization made a callendar and that this is the last year in their callendar. But they couldn't have made a callendar that lasts forever could they? It had to run out some time or other. So because of that people would either get supersticious or make stories up about the world actually ending this year. There is no conclusive evidence to support it though. It's just superstition. :)

BTW: If you know someone who actually believes it is the end then it's a perfect chance to place a bet with them on it ;P Either you will win or nobody will so what's to lose?

Well, yes, life WILL end on Earth. BUT, I don't think in 2012. I mean, it will end sometime, not this year, though. I'd say a billion years or so.
