@PHAUXXIE the tips covered a number of topics, such as where to get reference that you are able to legally use, etc.
But in general the purpose of reference is to learn how things look, how light hits them, whether an object has sharp angles, rounded curves, etc.
Normally I have my reference on a computer in front of me while I paint. But in this case I had only my phone with me, so I would switch views on the phone to see the reference, I drew the general shape, then started to refine it by asking such questions as where on the body do the legs start? Is the line that defines the back of the bird convex or concave (if you don't know what those terms mean, look them up, they are helpful to know).
You can do this process multiple times. Paint what you think it looks like, then compare to the reference to see how the reference differs, and go make your painting like that.
