The public domain is something that formerly copyrighted characters enter when they get too old (like 95 years?). It gives anyone the right to use characters in any way they want and they can make money off of it. Mickey Mouse will enter it in a few years. Winnie the Pooh already has.
They're making a Winnie the Pooh slasher movie so maybe one day we'll get the Charlie Brown Gangsters.
