Souls are, essentially, like the human heart: They keep the characters alive. They're more fragile though, breaking easily after enough damage, or cracking under intense stress or emotions. Once they break, however.... there is no surviving.
Soul colors and shapes are based on the trait of the person, i,e purple for perseverance and red for determination.
Upside-down Souls typically represent either a monster or an extremist, mentally or physically.

Glitching particals or "Error" signals mean they may be a virus or outcode
Normal-looking Souls are mostly meant to be human. None other than those with ties to Mt. Ebott or strongly the Sanses have them, but they can be acquired. Souls can also be smashed like glass or popped like grapes by outside forces, and even ripped from the person by various means. Once it leaves a body, they have 72 hours to find it or another Soul, or they perish.
