How they work is simple: place one earring on the ear opposite of your fusion partner, who'll be wearing the other one.

Fun fact, the Potara were originally meant to be permanent, but was retconned in Dragonball Super to only be permanent if a Kai was part of it, if not it only lasts for an hour.
