Have you started playing Scarlet and Violet yet? I just got it yesterday and it's pretty fun so far! But, ah, all the final evolutions for the starters are disappointing for me, so I might never evolve my Sprigatito, lol. XD No spoilers, though!
Which starter are gonna pick, Puzxled?
Here's a tip, too: don't outline eyes when using a semi-realistic style. The outlines on Sprigatito's eyes are especially jarring since it isn't black/white in color like Quaxly there, so it looks less blended in. Blending the eyes in is important here because you're using soft shading and no outlines on the bodies, which gives it a more realistic look. I would also ditch the white highlights.
Alternately, if you want to go the less realistic route... Use outlines on the bodies, keep the white highlights, and maybe even use cell shading instead of soft shading.
Have you ever heard of gradients, Puzzled? Try using those instead of black and white for shading.
@Rubber_Ducky@The_Adjudicator: I like how, regardless of your preference, it's easy to like or dislike something simply by it's design. I'm glad you both went to the trouble and played along on who you like best! >u<
@LaSofy: Thank you very much! Contest? The wallpapar one? Sure, thanks for letting me know ^u^
@Kay the pikachu: Both are very cute options! I honestly went into the game with no idea which I would pick ^^" Best case scenario: try and trade to get both, or all three :3
@Mewsea: Thank you and I have! I've spent hours playing coop with one of my cousins. It's so easy to get lost! I ended up picking fuecoco becuase I loved it smile <3 It evolved and I miss that smile... I haven't seen sprigatito's evolution but I have heard. *litten smiling happily at it's bad infuence* I can't deny that the eye outline is a mistake. I started it to how it would look and the playtime limit appeared and then I was too lazy to fix it. Oops. I didn't think it would look bad, but yeah I agree it's jarring. The white highlights were more to avoid the faces looking flatish. It might just be a me thing but I don't like if there's shading on one side and nothing on the other so I wanted some sort of highlights. It was originally yellow but it started looking like they were running towards a fire. The white highlights were basically my stylish compromise :/
I've been wanting to try some drawings using stylized outlines so I'll keep that in mind. Although, what is cell shading? Also, unless I'm mistaken, I am shading with gradients. I think the issue might be that I use the same, uh, dark endpoint for all my shading regardless of the lighter starting value. My shading is something I've been trying to improve and change but it's also a bad habit that happens to work decently enough TuT
@Puzzled Time escapes me, lol. Sorry for the delayed response!
I wouldn't be so upset with Sprigatito's final evolution if it weren't for the fact that these past 4 generations have been 90 percent humanoid starter evolutions. This is why starters become some of my least favorite Pokemon in the franchise. I'm okay with humanoid-looking Pokemon sometimes, but when it happens consistently - especially with the starters - it gets redundant and annoying.
Anywaaay... Sorry about the rant. I'm glad you're enjoying the games!
Perhaps you could have made the white blend into the faces more? If you wanted to use yellow, I would've added yellow into the sky. The color of higlight you choose is a reflection of the type of enviroment they're in. Keep this in mind.
Cell shading is the opposite of soft shading. Think of hard lines, like the ones you see in most cartoons. I also used it in my most recent painting. It's quick and easy.
I may not know many technical terms because I'm a self-taught artist, but I'm confident in what I'm talking about. Perhaps "colored gradient" would have made more sense here. I get the feeling that you just shade with black and use the base color to blend into it, right? But you want to avoid that because it makes the resulting image look dingy. Instead, use a darker shade of the base color. For instance, when coloring Sprigatitio, use the same color, but go a hair below it on the gradient. You could also go left or right, which will make it look even more pleasing. You can even go left and right on the color wheel when shading! That's what I like to do. But! The farther you stray from the base color, the harder it will be to blend, and the more "dingy" it will look.
@The_Adjudicator: I've seen some of those videos!!! They really are fun to watch so I'm with you on that XP
@Mewsea: Yeaaaaah, I tend to stray faaaaar from the base color XP I think I do this base on tips and tricks when I first started drawing but now I can't escape the "dingy" look. I'll keep in mind your tips when I work on my next drawing because I do wanna draw something less dark. Unless I wanna go dingy on purpose...
Thanks for the clarification on gradient shading and cell shading! I'll be keeping this in mind for now on too
Also, I never heard the word "dingy." I like it. I'm gonna use it now :3

I'm not into the Pokemon games myself, but to pick favorites, I'm certainly leaning toward Quaxly.

I might get a bit of flack for this, but my favorite thing about Pokemon Scarlet/Violet so far is watching all the bugs and glitches compilations. XD
