curious fox by mcollins

Just a quick sketch. I've been in a slump with my artwork for months now. I have lost my passion for it.
I kept trying to force myself to work on my commissions but it's been difficult. I think I've finally figured out why. Digital art has always felt more natural to me than painting on canvas and I've been neglecting my digital work. I need to try to discipline myself and keep my digital art up so I can boost my confidence and try to use my digital process as inspiration for my oil paintings

I like the head angle, as it emphasizes the inquisitive look.
As to the digital vs. traditional art aspect, it may be a medium issue, or it may be also just that commissions by their nature are a responsibility, on top of your other daily responsibilities. People who do commissions often indicate they have to take time to do art that they want, for no one else, only to please themselves, and to grow. So doing some art that isn't required may be part of it.
But if you want to integrate some of the digital art into the process, consider doing quick thumbnails in digital of possible traditional commission pieces.
You could use that to explore pose or composition options in a medium that feels more natural, is cheaper, etc. And you could send them all the ideas you like to see which take they like best before using supplies etc.
It would also help to work out composition puzzles or issues before you start on a large scale.
Or, you could just find people who want digital commissions! You can make prints.

@tall73: Thanks for the feedback! Yeah I like the idea of digital thumbnails. I seem to be able to paint digitally without even thinking about it but with oil paintings I really struggle with the steps I take to build up the painting. Thumbnails would help with that, on top of compositional ideas.
I don't really like the idea of selling prints. I feel like the fact that you can print as many copies as you want sort of de-values digital art and I have no idea how to price prints

@mcollins if only Non-fungible tokens had worked out, but the market is struggling!
However, some artists deal with that through limited release, numbered prints, or even one-print only. They can still build value as long as you are the one controlling the amount.
The nice part about that is you can also agree that you can display it as your art, in full original quality, digitally, but they can still have the prints.
There are succesful commission artists working digitally. Though it helps to be awesome. If you build a following online you will have an audience that likes what you do, so you can do what you like.
On the other hand, oil paints have some built in audience and a more esxtablished market, so it is easier to get business. But you don't want to wind up trapped into pleasing the customer with a style you don't care for as much If you enjoy both, then great. But if you really prefer digital most of the time, then you may as well work in that way as often as possible, and then do the other just to expand your general knowledge and problem solving art skills. Digital is also deliverable easily across distance, without shipping, so margins are easier!
And since you like animal art, another option is digital pet portraits where you retain display rights, but you can send them a link to an eshop such as redbubble, etc., where they can get whatever prints they want, or t shirts, or mugs, or shower curtains, or pillows, etc. and you would get a small cut.
In fact, I did sell at least one of my colors paintings on redbubble. And back a long time ago I sold some deviantart prints.
I wasn't planning to but people asked me about them so I put them up for them to buy them. So if you just have occasional interest, that is one way to monetize it and sell merch!
If you make more broad audience appeal items some are able to make considerable passive income from merch sales.

@tall73: You're a fountain of knowledge! It does sound convenient working exclusively digitally, but I dunno.. there's something that attracts me to the idea of oil paintings. I just feel like if I could get the process to a consistent level I would be happy. I think maybe I need to be painting more often to get a feel for it. Still feels more natural for me to be finger painting on a screen than to hold actual paint brushes

whats with all these words in the comments?

mcollins

20 Feb, 2023, 8:16 pm

@madwurmz: the comment section is a great place for words! Lots of words. Constructive words, critical words, complimentary words. The more words, the better! I always enjoy reading people's feedback on my paintings. Furthermore, I think sometimes we can get into a habit of just typing generic compliments with no heart. It's good practice to really converse in a more authentic and meaningful manner lest we become like mindless robots with no independent thoughts of our own. If you ever feel like giving me a nice long paragraph of constructive criticism I'd be super appreciative. I could definitely learn a lot from you. So in closing I'd like to just say, words are good. Words words words. Where would we be without them?

I agree words words words, my thoughts usually have thousand and one words, 'but' this 'maybe' that , and I got nothing but good words for your work, you are right it is entertaining to read comments.
I was just being a counter weight to the long text, it is not always obvious what I mean, but compared to a real one to one talk, that is instant able to understand positive honest communication , also healthy to spend time together, while time spend online with comments is just that, nothing like the real conversation.

mcollins

24 Apr, 2023, 2:17 pm

@madwurmz: yeah I get what you mean. Most of the time I just think as I type and end up with a huge chunky paragraph. It's harder for text to flow as naturally as one on one conversation, with delays in replies and stuff

In the realm of words they dwell
And weave their thoughts with skill and grace
They marvel at the painted scenes
That stir their souls and minds and hearts

They know that words are precious gifts
But sometimes they can lose their spark
And fail to convey the subtle shades
Or nuances of a real talk

They also seek to grow and learn
And welcome honest critique
They strive to hone and polish their
Their art and craft and technique
