you cant merge layers until after ur done editing them !! just create a separate layer for background, character, etc n keep them separated

So sorry Nyx once you merge layers your main option is to click undo right after if not it can't be undo so easily.

Layers help you layer your art.
For instance draw a sketch on 1 layer.

Then add a new layer on top and line art the parts you like from your sketch.

Then if you want to color your drawing add a layer under your lineart. This is so your color does not go past your line art. Kinda like you don't want to color over a line in a coloring book.

Depending on how you draw you can make a new layer for shading. Where your shading layer is mainly over your color layer. Sometimes it can also be over your line art but that depends on how you draw.
Merging layers is so if you drew something you want to stay that way you merge those layers together. So they are now together and they can't be separated.
If you merge layers by accident click undo which on the switch it's the ZL button on the left controller. But it only works right after you do something you don't like.

Layers also have the function to make their opacity lower. Which the way I use it is I draw a sketch then make the sketch a lower opacity.
I then make a new layer and draw over my sketch. It is how you get the best line art from a sketch.

I was able to add another layer and draw on it and erase without ruining the background!!

Me too, as now I get to practice it. ^w^

1st, draw a backgroud, 2nd, push add layer and sketch somtin, 3rd, add a layer and fade the sketch a lil, then trace over the sketch, on the new layer, 4th, add a layer and put it under the outline layer, and color it in, 5th add a layer, and add detail,(shading and stuff) last,take the outline layer away, then your done
