Ohh, well: Tirek became a villain because I assume he was just a bad guy and when his brother decided to not try to conquer Equestria, he refused. Got thrown into Tarturas and was trapped in there until he gained enough strength to escape after the guard left Tartarus in one of the MLP episodes.
Queen Chrysalis (The Bug lady) is a changeling, commanding a changeling army (But lost it towards the end) and needed "love" to survive off of like food, also she is just an evil character.
(Chrysalis, Cozy Glow and Tirek were turned to stone at the end of the show. They were never redeemed.)
Nightmare Moon was caused by Luna's jealousy over Celestia, probably depression I assume and wanting control.
King Sombra (This comes from the comics, since the comics explained it) when he was a kid saw a vision of himself in the Crystal Heart becoming evil and instead of doing his best to avoid that future just accepted it out of blind faith that he couldn't change it. Despite his best friend destined to become an Alicorn but left her studies to try to save him, and failed. Proving the crystal heart wrong. But he became corrupted by dark magic, and turned the previous crystal empire leader into crystals before shattering her and sending it all over Equestria.

Crystal ponies do exist but they aren't literal crystals, but Sombra turned the ruler INTO literal crystal and thats when he shattered her. So she was turned into a crystal statue but still alive
