Be merciful to me, a sinner! by tall73

Luke 18:9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt:
10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’
13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” ESV

The people who heard Jesus would have been surprised by the events of the story, and the lesson taught.
The Pharisees were a religious group, and were respected by the poeple. However, tax collectors were often looked down on, and treated as outcasts. Since they would collect taxes for Rome who had conquored their homeland, they were considered traitors to their people. Some tax collectors would take more taxes than required and make money off of others.
When the audience heard that the religious person and a tax collector were both going to the temple, where God was worshiped, they would expect God to judge the tax collector, and bless the religious man. But Jesus set this on its head. It was the tax collecter who went home declared right with God.

We all sin, and God knows the heart. The tax collector didn't deny his sin, but asked for mercy, and God gave it to him.
But the Pharisee thought he was better than others, and didn't need mercy, and he did not receive it.

A lesson in humility. There is none good but God.

A quick disclaimer to start my comment, I trust in the admonishion of Paul in his Epistle to the Philippian (4:8[which I will shorten for brevity]) "Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report; if there be any virtue, any praise, think on these thing."
I've had the opportunity to study the teachings and beliefs of people from a vriety of faiths, including their literature, and my mind likes to piece together complimentary doctrines and principles.

In The Book of Mormon, there is a verse in Ether twelve:27 which reads (speaking as if from Jesus himself);
"And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them."

That, in conjunction with Matthew 23:twelve
"And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted."
In my mind, regardless of the sources, are inspired, and are complimentary to this message.
Oppinions may differ, but I believe there's inspired principles hidden, like little treasure gems, in some of the least expected places.
