In the MLP G4 comics, the leader of the Crystal Empire long before Cadence was Amore. On the night Sombra stole the Crystal Heart, she attempted to stop him. Resulting in Sombra turning her to stone, breaking the statue apart. Sending peices all across Equestria. She wasn't dead, but, at least in the comics, she was never reassembled because (I think, memory Isn't great.) all the peices were never found. Not even 1000 years later.
