This is another one of the prizes from my #soup100 contest. @kit_kat requested Nick and Charlie from Heartstopper in a particular snow scene from the show. I'm nervous about this one because i literally know nothing about Heartstopper but i can tell the fandom is pretty strong so hopefully i did it justice. It seems like a really sweet story... but i've only seen this one scene. Also thank you for your patience in waiting for your prize.

The Colors! Gallery moderators will look at it as soon as possible.

@_soap i'm me than happy to share the tips i know but i also have some bad habbits and by no means an expert. Is there anything specific about what i draw that you want to learn from?

@_soap well a lot of people would say the best advice is practice and i get that but i don't thnk it is helpful or answering the spirit of the qestion so i'll offer my own "best advice".
1. use reference. the masters used reference. the pros use reference. don't let anyone tell you that reference is cheating. we literally have an undo button but people turn their nose up at reference. reference is a tool and it is vital for realism. you can't imitate reality without studying reality.

2. study reality. knowing how something works in the real world will greatly improve how you draw it. knowing how an oak tree grows from a single large trunk to a few large branches then to many smaller twigs will help you draw every oak tree. knowing human muscles and the skeleton shape the human form will improve how you draw all people. knowing that the frets on a guitar neck get consitently smaller will improve every guitar.

3. Start by drawing shapes not things. Get more details across the piece. You don't bake a loaf of bread one slice at a time. start with a dough or in this case large shapes that can be adjusted. let it rise and start to give it form. bake it by rendering shadow and light over texture. the last part is cutting it up by getting into the finer details. the approach that leads most people to failure is by trying to start with the details and find it exhausting and nothing goes together.

4. Take your time. Realism usually take more time than other styles. Some people can work fast but honestly don't be afraid to treat each artwork as a project. take breaks. work in stages. futz around. delete things and redraw them. drawing fast means familiarity with drawing that subject. if you have never drawn something before it'll probably take a while so get comfortable and prepare for a long journey. don't beat yourself up for not being a printer.
if you want more i have more :)

@_soap you are very welcome. I hope it helps you get started with realism. whilst it is in my head here is one last tip for now but it's more an attitude tip. Realism is just one style and whilst it will impart a lot of its wisdom other styles have a lot to offer too that realism can't. i say this because realism kind of has... a reputation... by means of some real toxic fans. some people view it as the peak of art and look down on all else. stay clear of those who look down on others. <3
