i'm thinking that the fungus spider is trapped in a cell and uses its spores to transfer to people outside of the cell who come into contact with the spores
and if you don't have a hazmat suit or protective devices (like the scientist usually does but not here) the spores infect the person or object and the spider can mind transfer to the infected object
