Alone Again, Naturally by TB_studios

Just workin' on lighting, reflection, shading ect. This was fun practice. I had at first an issue determining were to set my lighting, typically I set my lighting first but I wanted to try something different this time.
Also if you notice any issues with the piano, look I can't believe I got it THAT close without a reference :P
I'm aware this isn't a 'realistic' painting but I felt that it would probably be corrected in a similar fashion:) #rdfb

*GASP* brooo this is beautiful!! I love the little cracks on the pillars. And you did a pretty good job on the piano with no ref :o

@Hailsss
Thank-you! The cracks in the pillars was one of my favorite parts of the painting, beside the reflection of the pillars on the floor, that, that was number one for me

Thank you for using the #rdfb tag to request feedback on your painting!
It does read nicely as a piano. And the figure works well. I like that the only apparent color in the piece is the slight tinge of blue on the lonely figure. The greys build the atmosphere.
Some of the columns look a bit too organic, almost like trees. I think in this case that is a combination of the narrowness of the columns, and roughness of texture. I like the cracks, etc. but columns, being non-organic, are usually quite smooth, at least in the non-cracked portions.
The light does give the idea of focused direction, as though coming through a window. One thing to conisder is that if you have a shaft of light in this fashion you will see a strong shadow pattern in the part of the floor not in the directed light beam. And the cast shadows of the pillars will be strongest for those columns directly in the light, and much more subdued (as they are part of a larger shadow pattern) for the columns outside the light.
The piano is a bit too wide, and I get that you are working without reference. But one clue that it is too wide is that the person could not hope to reach both ends of the keys! Sometimes function helps determine scale.
Overall it does a good job of communicating the mood you were going for, and I enjoyed giving feedback on this piece.

@tall73 Thank-you so much, I really appreciate the help!
Yea when I painted the piano I should have boxed off each end to keep the same size but less keys, in my mind of course the keys had stopped much closer then the two ends of the piano but I wanted the piano to seem quite large to his body mainly to make it feel more lonely, and make it seem almost as if there should have been a duet (another person beside him). Thanks again! :)

@tall73
The light on the right side of the painting you said the columns would have a larger shadow, well when I painted it, the way I set the lighting the light is coming in at about a 25 degree angle which now cancels out the shadow of the columns in between, however on the left side of the painting the columns as you will notice have a much more intense shade, I dont know if I communicated that the best way but I hope you can decipher what I was trying to say lol!

Wow!!!

tall73

08 May, 2022, 5:10 am

@TB_Studios while it can look a bit odd with it being that wide, it does convey the idea that someone could sit next to him, but is not., since he is way to the left. Perhapas something slightly in between would convey that but not be quite as exagerated. But it is great that you are thinking through these aspects of what the painting is communicating. And with some styles this sort of distortion to get the mood accross is fine.
As to the column shadows, if you are indicating that reflected light eliminates most of the shadows in the brightest area, I can see how that might happen.

However, the beams of light seem to extend beyond the brightest area to the right. It seems if there are bright beams coming through, the brightest area should be where they meet the floor.
And wherever the light is hitting the floor it looks like there should be more of a distinction between the shadow area and bright area. You have some increased brightness near the right columns, but the general shadow area (not just the cast shadow) on the left side, and down in the foreground seems like it should be darker to contrast with the direct light, as they are further from that reflected light as well.

If you are able to see this image hosted in the colors discord it shows a very rough idea of what strengthening the light and shadow areas might look like. It tends to draw more attention to the figure as well.

@tall73
Oh wow! I looked it up that looked pretty cool! How did it look so different did you send it through some kind of filter?

tall73

09 May, 2022, 5:19 pm

@TB_Studios no filter needed! You can do it too, it just takes a bit of practice. I did this in a photoshop type program. But I then went and tested in colors as well using an import of the downlaodable .png as a background in the Android version of colors. It still works the same. (I deleted the painting afterward though, and you can't upload it with your image showing)

Try making a new copy of the painting. Then make a new layer on top of your existing layers. You can use the classic hard or classic soft, set to the largest setting. Then take the opacity to the nearly the lowest setting. Then eyedrop your grey tone. Slide the value on the color picker to nearly black within that same grey. And start laying on tint over the top. This will allow you to darken areas. Use more layers to get it more dark.
If you use the hard brush it doesn't blue things as much. but you will get some harder edges. Take your classic eraser at the almost the lowest opacity as well and clean up those hard edges to blend in.
Then make a new layer and take the grey to nearly the lightest value and do the same with the light areas.
Also, @Madwurmz made a nice version on the discord that shows some little floating dust in the light beam, etc. There are lots of things you can do with sublte, very transparent, layers.
At some point I understand we are getting dodge and burn tools, and those could do this perhaps even easier.

This is what my layers looked like on top of the painting, with the very transparent tones:

@TB_studios
... eh

tall73

14 May, 2022, 2:23 am

@TB_Studios yes, those are just layers on top of the base image to add light and dark. You can take it quite a ways without it overpowering the image itself.

tall73

14 May, 2022, 2:24 am

Another possible option on the Switch would be to put a layer underneath the painting, put dark and light areas where you want them on that underpainting, then adjust the transparency of the top layer. This prevents blurring by putting it on top.

Na I don't I didn't much care for the agreements, it seems to give the devs just about everything they could ever want. I personaly don't feel like giving anyone that much levrage, ya know? Obviosly that is just a personal opinion but you know how it is. I don't remember exactly what they were, but I remeber not liking it
How you been by the way? It's been a while since I heard from you

I'm pretty good, I won't bore you with the bad stuff. I started an art discord and it's gained quite a few members, most notably some people from an art webinar I did about a week ago hosted by Graphixly, Wacom, and CSP. Pretty cool honestly. Not much else, really, mostly because it's summer break.

@Vendettabean i hear ya lol.
But I also agree with CoolDude, its not a bad thing to be vegan at all! :) I was for about 2 years for health reasons. I think its just when some vegans are really forceful that everyone convert to that life style that it becomes a bit much.
