Practicing realism some more :o This one was a bit more tricky than the last one, not sure why tho :I also i gave up on blending lol but i still think it looks cool.

@Lydi072 at least shout spoilers! lmao xD

@Lydi072 lol spoilers above? Not sure that helps! But I am familiar with the story anyway.
@Hailsss This is very good! With more opaque pieces you have to be careful about over blending. This looks good as is, The contrast is great. The references on both of these were good as well, because they have one eye obscured in shadow which gives a more natural point of interest for the eye in light. Often times one domimant eye is best.
As to it being more difficult, for realism women tend to be more difficult, especially younger women. For realism you have to show plane changes, but they are more subtle for women in most cases than for men because they tend to have less angular faces.

Ahhhh I love these!! I've been avoiding trying to paint realism for so long even though its on the bucket list, these are very motivating though!!!

@razberry @Lydi072
Essentailly you want shadows, mid tones, and lights. The blending then integrates those areas.
There are different approaches to blending.
1. use the soft brush. It blends better.
2. Use the hard brush or bristle brush but use more transparency. this allows you to glaze tones over the top to mix together.
3. With less transparent (more opaque) you can also do what is called "tiling" which uses less bleindng, but uses shapes of small solid color which round the form by using in-between colors.
The goal of all of those is to transition where plane changes occur.
Check out this video for a discussion on planes in the head:

Since the head model that the video uses is expensive, Here is a 3d tool that allows you to see how the head planes look in different lighting:

The painting by Hailsss uses more of a tiling approach, with sections of colors tranisitioning the shadows to the light.

@tall73 thank u so much!!

I think another reason this painting is more challenging than the last is that there is a stronger contrast between shadow and light areas. Therefore, you need more transition in the mid tones. And blending that all gets complicated.
