I ended up modifying the tutorial by erasing just the very tiniest edges and erasing on full. And you can't do this unless you select to only view current layer on the 3d layers tab. That being said, I think it worked on the tree trunk best. The best part of the tree itself is actually that you can see the branches through this leafy texture. This gives me some interesting ideas...
