I think I understand what Dragonscar is saying. Adding lights and shadows by grades, adding and subtracting as your eyes see the need, for me at least took lots of practice. But by learning from others, I've seen huge improvements in my own handiwork.
Be experimental, and see what works.
In a more relevent note, Good work on the Bowser Icon.

I can't help but think about Mario 64 Bowser laughing at my failures whenever I see this icon...
