The axolotl is a species native to single lake in Mexico called Lake Xochimilco. Due to pollution and the introduction of tilapia, an invasive species, they are critically endangered.
While we are use to seeing the pink color morph, they are naturally dark in color and pet trade axolotls are a hybrid between tiger salamanders to increase color morphs.
Currently there are breeding programs in place to incease the number of true wild axolotls.
