That pretty much sums it up.
That being said, some fossil discoveries have been more preserved thsn others. I remember hearing about that once on a show that mentioned a T. Rex fossil preserved enough for the research teams to guess that it's vocal chords, if that's what you'd call it, may have sounded like the hissing of a crocodile. This is also there they discovered quills with red pigments, suggesting it had red feathers.
