Studies and practice I guess...
My style is petty much the same as normal/realistic equines aside from the face and exaggerated hair. (hair - forelock, mane, tail)
I draw equines with human eyes and the head is structured a little different as a result. Still working on making that look a bit better from a front view...

I would have the eyes follow the structure of the face in the front view. Spirit does a pretty good job at giving human-like expressive eyes to a horse while keeping realistic horse proportions intact
