This was my old problem... now what I do is make "adoptable" characters. I design a character, give them a backstory, and then someone pays me five bucks to have the rights to that character. Wham! Bam! Thank you, ma'am. I got five bucks and those creative steroids out.

YES. Except I always try to make them for a story, and it makes the situation worse when I half*$$ one character's part as compared to others, and it sucks SO.... bad, like having favorite children........ :(
