I agree, debates are very insightful. (Also arguing can be used interchangeably with the word debating but the word debate is more finite in its definition^^^)

Yes they do unfortunately get a bad rep because people do so many things wrong when present their arguments
Personal attacks(as well as taking the subject personally), nasty statements, jumping to assumptions of what you opponent will say are all examples of what goes wrong. X'D
I love a good argument and a good debate. Contrary to what most think avoiding these subjects and not understanding them probably does more harm then good (and reinforces bad habits within debates)
To anyone interested learning more about it though, I highly recommend studying fields of philosophy. As they layout basic frameworks of logic and fallacies to watch out for. :)
Counter arguments also has a very thorough explaining on how to change someone's mind. (You should also watch 12angry men)
