The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a species of baleen whale. It is one of the larger rorqual species, with adults ranging in length from 12–16 m and weighing around 25–30 metric tons. The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and a knobbly head. (Wikipedia)

It's not something must do, but I think you need to draw/learn about realism first before draw with whatever styles you like. Even it's just copying' but it's a good exercise to improves your skill, and also you can memorize the object (like how the anatomy, shading, or texture) for your future references.

Completely agree with what you say! Realism gives you a good understanding of how everything works. Then you can just adapt it to your art style. Stunning piece as usual lol.
