I guess it's either about balence and/or luck and opportunity. You could try having both your game and a real job, but it would be a long while until that game comes out. It isn't impossible tho, and it' the safest, albeit somewhat less rewarding route. You could focus and invest into your game, but remember that it might be a risky play, if your game doesn't generate enough revenue to support you.
TL;DR, you dad has a point, but it's ultimately your decision. If you do make a game however, I would totally buy it. Also remeber that success usually never comes right away, especially with indie games, so stay strong in whatever path you forge.
Also, quick note, it sometimes gets redundent whenever you question if people actually care about your characters, despite the answer being right in your face. I mean, look at how many people follow you and like your art. Heck, two of my major characters are directly inspired by Dirt's design! People do like and care about the characters you draw..

...and the world they inhabit. You just gotta look sometimes, you know?
