There's something strange about Esme. She doesn't speak. This isn't unusual for a dragon her age, but even when she grows up she doesn't. Nobody knows whether she's physically unable, mentally unable, or just chooses not to talk. She communicates mostly through growls and squeaks. It's also unknown if her intelligence is normal for a dragon.

As a child, Esme is clingy and dependent on other people. Growing up, she becomes more independent, but remains fiercely loyal to those she cares about.
