swingy birdy

bird wings are funky to draw, it can be tough to be consistent with drawing the (proper) placement of markings and patterns on partially folded wings.

if it helps, remember that bird wings are structured kinda like human arms and so they move kinda like arms. iirc the flight feathers (primary, secondary, tertiary attach to theee ... bones? of the wing/arm, the other feathers (flight coverts and "other" coverts *cant remember "other"'s proper name. auxillary?) dont attach to bones. (iirc that is)

you could use an arm to get a better feel for how folded wings go (pretty much any "drawn in" arm position is alright, note that birds can rotate and bend their "wrist" more than we can though) then when youve got a better grasp on the underlying structure of the wing & how it moves & folds, you can figure on what part of the wing a marking goes on and how its appearance may change when the wing's folded vs how it looks on a fully opened wing.

okie i went & looked at that colored mURDER BIRD wip of yours, the wing stripes look like theyre on the "upper arm" and "forearm" (one stripe on each)

it's silly but you could take a marker (or wrap a little bit of ribbon or anything) on your arm in two places (upper & fore) then fold up your arm and look at it with a mirror to see how the stuff's positioned when your arm's folded.

i forgot to mention somethin about feathers: the different flight feathers are attached to different parts of the wing. primaries are attached to the "hand" area, secondaries are attached to the "forearm" area/segment and tertiaries are attached to the "upper" area/segment. the respective covert feathers (primary coverts, secondary coverts, tertiary coverts) cover their namesakes (so primary coverts cover the primaries) and the "other"/auxillary (i think that's the name lol) coverts cover the primary, secondary & tertiary coverts.

coverts coverts coverts
that word looks and sounds weird to me now
