The land of Ooo was created after the earth was in a massive Nuclear war. The radiation mutated the land creating its scenery & inhabitants. For example, the fish people are nuclear mutants. The signs are all around the land of Ooo if you look & listen hard enough.

The show puts evidence of an apocolypse kind of like a nuclear fallout, with Jake pointing out that "Rockets haven't been REinvented yet". But a cool theory anyway.
