Appreciate your comments. @cheechoo: I've been experimenting here and there. I tend to paint plein-air in a half impressionistic style anyway. Just thinking how far I want to push the abstract at the moment.
I should add that there is nothing wrong with using the soft brush. It's a useful tool that is great for really fine detailed work, and can also be used to create very subtle, or small texture. I tend to use it to soften edges or for quick gradients, but it feels very impersonal to me so I minimise it's use. Just my way of working though. Experimentation is the key.

Answer: Ditch the soft brush (feathered circle) and paint hard brush from the elbow. Go on the attack!
