Nirai isn't self-conscious of her body, she's very fine with it, especially in experimenting with the newest cute outfit she's seen, or putting her hair up in many different styles. She's a dancer, she dances in her human form and performs at festivals in her natural if she can.
What she is self-conscious about, is her magic. She hates it, the whispering of the shadows in her ear, it's begging and pleading, it scares her. When she was young she was playing around and absolutely terrified a few pups she was playing with (Vriska young are called pups). It scares her to this day and she never wants to scare her family like she did those kids.
Middusk is her light, her guide, he's always there when she needs him, yeah he drags her out of bed at 2 AM to play with magic, but he's there, and he keeps her away from the shadows.
Eventually, she realizes she's just pushing away who she really is and decides that stepping into the darkness is the way to go. She leaves Loreillis to live on earth, she leaves behind her light, not realizing it only stayed lit for her...
