so basically, in rp stuff, drift and king sonic ended up dealing with infinite and dr. eggman, until eventually they met two members of the jackal squad who helped them shed a new light on infinite's identity
thus, they set out to try and remove the ruby from infinite; they succeeded, but, due to the ruby's possessive abilities and drift being the one to succesfully remove the ruby, uh

this resulted in the ruby taking him over, creating crystals all over his body and shutting down drift's consciousness
this resulted in the ruby using his body to go on a rampage while king sonic and a few others tried to stop him
this eventually led to the ruby morphing drift's body into the monsterous, metal overlord-esque thing that's also in drift's tag
drift was defeated after a pretty long and city-destroying struggle, but he nearly died essentially since the ruby had corrupted a lot of his core programming, along with him losing most of his body
he's currently been fixed up in the rp but is still recovering mentally, his memory is incredibly spotty and he's still experiencing issues from the previous corruption
tl:dr, drift got possessed by the phantom ruby and is currently recovering, this image is him being initially taken over
