that's how i progressed, i backtracked to earlier areas i couldnt get passed and could find new regions of the map etirey
backtracking kinda happens a lot in hollow knight but its fun to explore

so infinite's poppin up in the tec rps, my idea is that (to introduce metal knuckles and also call out infinite as a threat) infinite creates a phantom metal knuckles and potentially a few others and sends em to crosspoint/tec's canonical name for crossover island to cause havoc
metal sonic and king sonic hang around crosspoint fairly often if they've not at mirror mobius, so obviously they'd be aware of this namely for it being on the news and investigate, thinking eggman simply rebuilt metal knucks
Big Fight occurs and then the actual metal knucks (with hat and bandana in the drawin) sucker punches the phantom and murders it maybe halfway through
hes not gonna be hostile or anythin from the start like metal sonic and tails doll were, if only for the fact he trusts metal sonic

but ye metal knuckles shows up cuz he actually built up a fairly good reputation for himself and the phantom essentially was ruining that so he basically said "SCREW YOU" and wanted to yeet the fake
my idea for metal knuckles is that he's pretty much gone on his own journey and become his own individual, thus the hat and bandana
the rust and such i mentioned in the post is cuz he's the exact same metal knuckles from sonic r, and thus, multiple years old
he's less hotheaded than knuckles and is a bit more cheery/mellow, & also straight to the point
very direct and not afraid to say anythin, he's much slower to trust but when ya get to know him he's a jokester

at first metal just didn't have a voice from eggman's rushedness and technical limitations, but then as he lost it more and more he wanted a tad bit more control
he still cares for metal, but he honestly feels more torn on what to do and such comes off as very cold and cruel at times
with changed motives comes changed behavior

im not that great at brainstorming/coming up with moves TwT i could try tho
