One of my old edgy Sonic AU's was that dark Sonic is an actual chaos-fueled entity in his conscious that manifested when Sonic first connected with the emeralds. Sonic is positive, but dark is negative. Dark absorbs all the negative emotions and he'll front when strong enough. They're completely linked.
