It's based off of deep sea bacterias/organisms that glow which I saw in a documentary.
Info:
Your speculum mainly dwells in ocean like habitats but can dwell on land for short periods of time if needed.
It can release bacteria clouds as a defense mechanism or if a cover is needed to escape, similar to octopus/squid ink.
It can release bacteria from it’s skin that have an extremely bright glow to them to light dark areas. These orbs and spots of light can potentially blind anything trying to harm it if your speculum so chooses.
Their claws and teeth are extremely sharp (optional) and are see through like the horns.
Special:
The type of translucent and glowing horns your speculum has are extremely rare and valued among its species, seeing these types is a once in a lifetime.
Relating back to the glowing bacteria it can release, they can also explode! This is an attack method it uses when fighting off predators or challengers; singular releases make small cracks and pops to scare or startle, clumps of bacteria can make loud bursts that can be heard miles away throughout the ocean and especially on land.
It can descend to anywhere in the ocean. It can only be in the deepest parts for short periods because of the immense pressure.
