Nexus heard rumors of a female energy manipulator that could compete with him and his gravity abilites, so he started serching for this so called challenge. Lann was on a exploration of her own until she had to stop at a nearby town where she meet Nexas face to face. Nexas getting the suspicion that Lann is the person he's looking for decided to test his theory by throwing a nearby metal bar at her which she reacted to by blocking it with her powers.
