also i understand being afraid to attempt realism because it is daunting BUT if you keep avoiding it out of fear of sucking, youll never get better at it. when you try to do realism, yes it will look pretty f**ked up and /will/ be blah but that's how it is for everyone. we all start out blah and stay blah for a long time but the more stuff we try (and fail!) the better we get. it takes lots of failures to succeed.
