Lightning flashed and the rain poured down in sheets. There weren't many windows within the ancient shelter but a pale gloomy light leaked in from the entrance of the door. Water continued to beat down on the roof and walls of what was left of an old bomb shelter. The bunker, had been carved into the side of a mountain, just off an overgrown trail. It was hidden well enough to be dismissed by an untrained eye and at first glance it looked to only be a heap of rubble covered in overgrown plants.

It was clear that no one had been using it for decades, maybe even longer, well not until recently. Harper Broke, a local farm girl, stumbled upon it while going for a trail ride in the mountains. It became a recent habit for her to venture there frequently on the excuse that she was watching for cool mountain birds. For whatever the reason she wanted to keep it to herself, always taking extra precautions in case someone decided to follow.

Rain thrashed harder against mountain side, from the interior it sounded like the endless soft banging of drums. Harper was seated at an old work table that was covered in parchment and dusty old books. Aside from her own personal journals, she had few of them cracked open. A lantern sat up top on the table as a source of light for reading. Most of the content in the books made almost no sense, and the ones that did were either torn or missing entire pages all together. Harper strummed her fingers against the surface of the table and she felt her eyes dragging. She had just about enough and was at the point of leaving the books for another time.
All of her time had been spent on decoding these ridiculous novels, and so far nothing had amounted to it. Empty notes and crumbled pieces of paper were all scattered around on the floor. Perhaps this was all a waste of time, what frustrated her the most was the books that were almost completely intact she couldn't even read, or begin to figure out what language and dialect they were written in. Harper sighed and dropped her head in a tired defeat. It felt like she had only been here a few moments, though the dim light from the entrance suggested that she was here all day, and that if she stayed longer it might mean for a sleep over in a creepy old bunker. The thought of sleeping here made her shudder, not to mention all the questions that'd get asked when she'd get home.

After sometime of inwardly debating with herself, she got up and prepared to leave. Though before even getting a chance to grab her things, a loud crash was heard from behind. Harper almost yelped, and wildly turned pulling out her pistol. "Psh" She grunted a little relieved, it was just another one of those nasty rats. They seemed to have taken up home there, long before Harper had even discovered the bunker. The rat made a hiss and stared at her from a dark corner, a mess of glass was made on the floor next to an old rotted bookshelf. She almost considered to shoot it right then and there, rats were annoying, they were partly the reason why the books were in such poor shape, plus they creeped her out.

"I guess you get a free pass on life today" She muttered concluding that a gunshot would only attract unneeded and unnecessary attention. That rat only flashed it's red eyes and chattered tormenting the poor girl before scurrying away somewhere unseen. "Yeah next time I'll bring traps! I won't forget them again." Harper growled, after the rat left she stashed the books and most of her notes inside a chest in a hidden corner of the room. It wasn't going to keep the rats out completely but it'd at least prevent them. When this was done Harper snatched up her bags threw on a coat and made for the door. They sky was still gloomy and the rain hadn't let up one bit. The worst part was she had to go home in it and come up with a reasonable excuse for her long absence.
