Team Hero consisted of the good guys like Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. Team Dark consited of darker characters like Shadow, Rouge and Dr.Eggman. Well in this new Sonic game It would have the same mechanic, only much bigger with more in depth, longer stories. Here are the characters that would be in it.
Team Heroes: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Silver, Blaze, Vector, Espio, Mighty, Ray and Sally Acorn (she would become game canon by changing her character and having Sonic meet her for the first time in this game.)

Team Dark: Shadow, Rouge, Dr.Eggman, E-123 Omega, Metal Sonic, Fang(Nack), Bean, Bark, Chaos Clone, Zavok Clone, Infinite Clone. (Fang,Bean and Bark would be their own seperate mini team forming Team Hooligans the treasure hunters getting in Rouge,Omega and Shadow's way as well as Team Heroes. Eggman invents a way to make perfect clones of Chaos, Zavok and Infinite and tries to take over the world. Also Shadow, Rouge and Omega are working for G.U.N.

Gameplay would consist of more of a free roam style. It would take place in the same setting as Adventure 1 and 2 with station square in the Middle and a bunch of different Zones around it. You would run around doing missions as the different characters who would feature different abilities:
Sonic: High Speed(duh), Homing Attack, Spin Dash, Light Ring Dash.

Tails: Flying for short periods of time at limited height, Many diffrerent weapons like guns and mechs, Dummy Ring Bombs.

Knuckles: Digging, Climbing, Gliding, Punching

Amy: Hammer, Spin Gliding, Slamming down on switches, Throwing Hammer.

Silver: Flying with his Psychokenksis (which would have a guage to limit his flying), Telekenisis, Warping around (jump traveling to major places he's been to)

Blaze: Fire Spinning (Homing Attack from the air), Running fast by shooting fire from hands and feet, gliding Iron Man style by shooting flames down from hands(note: flames are not powerful enlough to sustain flight unless...(con't)

...she is in her super form: Blazing Blaze after she acquires the Sol Emeralds (which would be apart of her story)

Espio: Turning Invisible (useful because he and would have stealth missions), Taking out enemies quietly with Shurikens (ninja stars), Walking on water with ninjitsu, Wall jumping, running fast, Assasinating robots with a quiet homing attack.

Vector: FINDING THE COMPUTER ROOM(lol jk) I really don't know what Vector would have. I guess the bubble gum bombs and glide from Sonic Heroeeeees! (Sonic Herooeees ohhhh) *electric guitar* Also he could use somekind of special mic to amplify that awful singing voice.
Mighty: Similar to Knuckles but no digging, gliding or climbing but insead using his armadillo armour to deflect many attacks. and his super powerful ground pound with shockwaves, picking up enemies and chucking them!

Ray: Gliding with the ability to regain altitude while going down. And that's all I could think of :P

oops, sorry for no spaces...also Tails would be able to pilot the Tornado. (yes I know Sonic and Knuckles can fly it too but only Tails can Capiche?)

Last is Sally...who I think I'll just replace with Charmy because it was a bad idea to introduce Sally like that. Charmy could fly like Tails and sting people I guess. And be CHARMING (lol)
