you're lucky you can even generate idea's for characters my dude, i can't even make ocs anymore.

and-- i think that the reason why one is able to draw neat designs or just somethin cool in general when aimlessly doodling is youre not pressured when doing it. when youre actively trying to make something "good," you put pressure on yourself and so you end up being less loose in your concepting & drawing process which screws you over.
some of my all time favorite arts ive ever done were fast, sort of aimless, highly experimental or a combination of any of those. my profile picture - the eastern carpenter bee? its timer says I3 minutes (i drew it & used a bee i had sitting on my hand for reference. precious little fella)

also, those crickets your that dad calls sprickets are some type of camel cricket! sprickets are one of their many names. lol
"camel crickets," "sprickets," "sand treaders," "criders," "monkey spiders" (and more names im unaware of)
